Until
his death in November 2000 you could often meet 85 year
old Richard Gall in person at his gallery, 36 Rue Mathurin-Regnier
and
he was generally there from 5 til 7pm every day except
Sunday.
There was a large amount of Richards' work
on view and he loved to talk about it. You could buy a
small « gravure » for as little as 300fr or
an original unframed watercolour or gouache starting at
around 1200fr. There were also some oils and cast bronze
sculptures and the prices were always reasonable and negotiable.
Many paintings were done in the forties and
fifties and it is intersting to note the different styles
and transitions. The work can generally be described as
abstract but there are different approaches such as "gestual","contructivist"
and the method of "simultanious contrast" made
famous by Delaunay whose exhibition caused such a stir
at Beaubourg recently and who was a friend of Richard.
